Origin
Mexico (Lower California).
Habitat
Grows in canyons and valleys of Lower California. Can also be found in coastal areas.
Morphology
A slender, grey, cylindrical trunk up to 22 m, covered with a thin layer of dead leaves. The fan-shapeded leaves form a dense crown. Inflorescence growing among the leaves base. Characteristic fibres between the leaf segments. Fruits small, round and blackish. In spite of its name, this palm is less robust than W. filifera.
Climate
Subtropical to cold temperate. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –5ºC (23ºF, USDA Zone 9a).
Germination
Seeds germinate quickly and can be stored for a long time.
Growing
Requires full sun and a well-drained soil. Grows better in compact, moist, clay soils. A very fast grower, has a very good response to fertilizers.
