Howea forsteriana
Common names
Kentia Palm, Sentry Palm, Thatch Palm.
Curiosities
Named after William Forster, senator in New South Gales.
Origin
Lord Howe Islands.
Habitat
Lowland forests, on sandy soil.
Morphology
It has 4 to 5 leaves, with dropping leaflets. Inflorescences have 3-5 branches. Fruits are ovoid, brown-orange to red when ripe (which takes some time).
Climate
Subtropical to warm temperate. More resistant than H. belmoreana. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –3.6ºC (25.7ºF, USDA Zone 9b).
Germination
Fresh seeds germinate erratically, sometimes after 3 years.
Growing
Resistant to light frosts. Can take full sun from the age of 5, but needs a shady position as a youngster. One of the most popular indoor palms, highly resistant to poor light and irregular watering. Can be found in most countries as the most popular indoor palm next to Chamaedorea elegans, although it is more expensive because of its slow growth and its more fashionable appearance.
