Curiosities
The trunks were used in house and canoe construction. In Choco region, Colombia, the swollen parts of the trunks were used to make coffins.
Origin
Central America.
Habitat
Generally, in lowland forests.
Morphology
Solitary trunks, swollen or also columnar. The leaflets are arranged in several ranks, giving a feathery appearance. Inflorescences growing from below the leaves. Fruits are globular and green-yellow.

Needs a warm, sheltered and moist position. Very tropical in its requirements.
