Origin
Northeast of South Africa in Kaffaria, east of Cabo Peninsula.

Exposed coastal hillsides.
Morphology
Usually a clumping palm with slender trunks up to 5-10 m tall, covered with the scars of fallen leaves. Rough, pinnate leaves. Interfoliar inflorescence. Fruits look like small coconuts, are around 3 cm, brown and fleshy. Resembles to Jubaea and even to Coccos nucifera.
Climate
Frost resistant, can withstand temperatures down to –7º C (the exact temperature depends from other factors like humidity). Appropriate for temperate climates and Mediterranean areas (see Jubaea chilensis). This plant has tolerated temperatures down to –3.9ºC (25ºF, USDA Zone 9b).

Growing
Frost sensitive, prefers a sandy and moist soil. A rather rustic plant that easily adapts to different conditions. Not very common in cultivation, but very interesting because of its resistance and its tropical appearance.
