Oliviformis because of the olive-shaped fruit, like Livistona chinensis.
Origin
New Caledonia, in the southeast and centre of the island.
Habitat
Moist forest, on acid soils and basalt rocks. Endangered in habitat.
Morphology
A solitary palm, that can reach 30 m. The trunk is unarmed, has prominent annular rings and a swelling in its base. Resembles Howea forsteriana when young, but adult plants can be easily differentiated. Inflorescence arched. Fruit long, red when ripe.
Climate
Seems to cope in temperate climate.
Germination
Seeds are difficult to germinate.
Growing
Like most palms in New Caledonia, prefers very acid soils, so it is difficult to cultivate. Some authors suggest adding vinegar to watering. Prefers a shady and moist position.
