Madagascar.
Habitat
Not seen in natural habitat, only found as cultivated plant. The reddish crownshaft gives the common name to this palm.
Morphology
Very similar to D. lastelliana. The single trunk can reach 10 m tall and 25 cm of diameter in adult plants. Leaflets are acute and have 3 main nerves. Fruits are globular.
Climate
Rather cold tolerant. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –2.2ºC (28ºF, USDA Zone 9b).
