Curiosities
The trunks were used in docks and to make fences; the leaves to make roofs, knapsacks, ropes and cords; the fibres to make hats and brooms; and seeds oil has been used in home medicine. The Symbol of the National Botanic Garden in Santo Domingo.
Origin
The old Island of Hispaniola (the actual Haiti and Dominican Republic).
Habitat
Grows in groups in very dry open areas and in limestone rocky areas, but also in pine forests. Widely distributed from sea level to 500 m above sea level.
Morphology.
A medium sized, solitary fan palm with a smooth, thin trunk, to about 10 m tall. The circular leaves have a dark-green top and a very attractive silvery underside.
Climate
Adapts easily, from tropical to temperate climate (with few frosts).

Needs a well-drained, sunny position. Often seen in gardens and parks.
