San José Hesper Palm, Palma del Taco.
Curiosities
After T.S. Brandegee, botanist and first collector. Wood is used in construction and fruits are edible.
Origin
Mexico.
Habitat
Northwest of Mexico, in dry canyons and mountains at 350 m above sea level.
Morphology
A solitary palm, up to 10-12 m tall and 30 cm in diameter. Leaves green above. Fruits are almost round, bright brown or with brown lines.
Climate
Temperate to tropical. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –5.7ºC (21.8ºF, USDA Zone 9a).
Germination
Growing
Needs full sun, and a well-drained position. Young plants can also be grown at full sun. Frost and drought resistant. Dislikes high humidity.
