A good quality edible oil can be extracted from the fruits. This oil is also used to make soaps. The leaves are used to obtain wax. The apical bud and the seeds are edible.

This palm stands out for its trunk that looks like a tower made of many crowns one on top of the other and slightly rotated, or like a tall pagoda made of many spiralling floors. Each crown is the dead leaf sheath. The leaf sheaths usually form 5 spiralling lines, as the leaves do. Pinnate leaves.
