Morphology
A dark brown, single trunk, which has spines in young plants, while in adult plants it’s smooth and unarmed. Develops stilt roots, the base of trunk is withered away leaving the aerial parts completely supported by the roots. Plants growing in a sheltered position have simple, entire leaves, while those growing in a windy place have divided, pinnate leaves.
Climate
Moist equatorial, tropical. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to 6.7ºC (44.1ºF, USDA Zone 11).
Germination
Fresh seeds easily germinate.
Growing
Can be grown in full sun, but prefers partial shade, especially as a youngster.
