Origin
Belize, Cuba (West) and Mexico (Peninsula of Yucatan).
Habitat
Calcareous areas derived from limestone soils.
Morphology
Very similar to S. mauritiformis, but can be distinguished for the slender trunk and the bell-shaped flowers with fleshy petals.
Climate
Tropical in its requirements, although has been successfully cultivated in Mediterranean climate. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –2.2ºC (28ºF, USDA Zone 9b).
