Phoenix roebelenii
Common names
Dwarf Date Palm, Pygmy Date Palm.
Curiosities
Can withstand growing under water in areas with seasonal flooding. Named after Carl Roebelen, who discovered this species in Laos. Small but edible fruit.
Origin
Laos, in South East of Asia, North of India and Myanmar (the actual Burma).
Habitat
Shady rainforests.
Morphology
A small palm, up to 2 m tall. A slender single trunk, with the scars of fallen leaves. Very thick crown. Slightly arched, flat, pinnate leaves, shiny dark green in colour. Interfoliar inflorescence. Long, dark red to purple-black fruits.
Climate
Can adapt to temperate climate, cold tolerant. Tropical to temperate. This palm has tolerated temperatures down to –2.9ºC (26.7ºF, USDA Zone 9b).
Germination
The small seeds easily germinate after 6 to 8 weeks.
Growing
Can be grown in full sun to partial shade and deep shade. Requires plenty of water during the dry periods. Can be also grown inside (place in a corner to avoid the spiny leaflets) but needs plenty of light. Excellent in pots, because of its size, and in patios with reduced space. Appropriate in coastal areas with salty air. Drought tolerance, once established. Needs regular watering and nitrogen rich fertilizers.
