Pseudophoenix ekmanii
Common names
Dominican Cherry Palm, Cacheo de Oviedo (local name).
Curiosities
As in the other Pseudophoenix, the sap is used to produce honey and palm wine. This however kills the plant. Pseudophoenix means ‘false Phoenix,’ although the name is not very appropriate since they are really different palms. However, the palm took its name long ago, when little palms were known, and botanists had as only reference the palms in the harbour of the Canary Islands. Eating the fruits can cause stomach-ache, probably because it contains calcium oxalate (also present in the genus Caryota and Arenga).
Origin
Dominican Republic. (Barahona Penninsula and Beata Island).
Habitat
The biggest population is under protection in Jaragua National Park, although it decreases because of sap collectors. Grows on limestone rocks in the driest areas.
Morphology
On of the most beautiful palms, with a swollen trunk up to 60 cm, and 5-6 m tall. Leaves 1.5 m long with a whitish underside.
Climate
Tropical and subtropical.
Germination
Seeds retain their germination potential for a long time, up to 2 years. However, it is recommended to use fresh seeds.
Growing
Not very common in cultivation, although it is now becoming more popular. A wonderful palm, however a slow grower. Needs a sunny and well-drained position.
